Workshops

A reflective workshop exploring motherhood, the mother wound, and the ocean as both mirror and teacher. Through interactive art, community, writing and shared stories, we’ll explore the many faces of “mother”. Together we’ll trace early imprints of care, safety, nurturance, and grief while exploring what it means to re-mother ourselves in ways that feel more spacious, intuitive, and alive. An invitation to listen to the body, soften into curiosity, and find new rhythms of relating through the wisdom of the ocean.

NATALIE SMALL, LMFT
I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and postpartum doula in California who loves using the arts, movement, and the natural world around us and within us to help explore and express our truest selves in the world. I spent the last 20 years creating and developing what is now known as the Groundswell Surf Therapy™ model and curriculum, and I have trained and supervised clinicians around the world through the non-profit Groundswell Community Project. I founded the Groundswell Clinic and Institute to continue expanding my practice in art and somatic based psychotherapy from a trauma and resilience informed lens. I see the intersection of women's health, ocean health, and mental health and believe in the power of healing within community and nature. I am currently 7 months into my own postpartum journey which has reignited my passion for supporting women in their life cycles and transitions. I look forward to unpacking, exploring, and looking to nature as our guide as we spend time redefining what mothering can be.

Kristin Mathes, LCSW
I am a licensed clinical social worker and trauma therapist working with women in the state of Oregon. I help women who suffer from physical symptoms of trauma, panic, anxiety, and stress find relief in their body and mind using a somatic and holistic approaches to healing and navigating a world that often exacerbates our stress. My goal is to help women reconnect to their personal freedom in their relationships to self, others, and life. I believe the most profound healing can happen in nature, in community, in relationship, and on an adventure. I created Emerge Surf and Somatic Therapy to take therapy beyond the office and into the ocean connecting women to movement, to nature, to surfing, and to each other.
I am in my first year of motherhood with an 8 month old boy which has inspired me to create more spaces for women to be in community together. When we gather grief softens, identity expands, and new ways of mothering ourselves become possible
