We can't control the ocean,
but we can learn how to surf the waves

Surf therapy uses the surf environment as both a classroom and a catalyst—where challenges in the water become opportunities for growth, self-awareness, and empowerment. Through guided reflection, goal-setting, and shared experiences, participants are supported in connecting more deeply with themselves, others, and the ocean.

No prior surf experience necessary. We meet you where you are at in your relationship to surf and the water.

There's something inherently soothing
about being in the ocean...

If you're feeling anxious … surfing asks you to breathe.

If you’re overthinking and ruminating… surfing leaves you no choice but to be present.

If you’re doubting yourself… surfing shows you what you're capable of.

If you’re feeling disconnected and lost… the ocean reminds us we belong in nature.

If you’re stuck and heavy… the waves invite play and joy back into your life.

Our programs are rooted in a trauma-informed, evidence-based surf therapy model that brings together the healing power of the ocean, supportive community, and intentional facilitation. Each session is designed to create a safe, inclusive space where participants can build confidence, develop emotional resilience, and experience a sense of belonging.

What participants said they gained:

  • Increase self esteem and positive self talk

  • Shifted thinking toward what my body can do vs how it looks

  • Experienced their body in a positive way

  • Learned to let go of controlling everything

  • Improved boundaries and communication skills

  • Felt a sense of belonging

  • Enjoyed my reflection in the water!

  • Experienced joy and play for the first time in ages

  •  A year's worth of therapy in one week.

Learn about our Surf Therapy Research

IMG_1484_edited.jpg

At Emerge Surf and Somatic Therapy, we are dedicated to understanding the impact of our programs on participants and continuously improving to serve future participants better. To achieve this, we gather valuable feedback from participants during each retreat. We are also working with Dr. Christine Norton, co-facilitator and lead researcher, to conduct a research study examining the impact of surf therapy with our program. Christine’s expertise is instrumental in guiding the study’s design and analysis and helping us refine and improve our programs. Her research aims to uncover the profound benefits of surf therapy for adult women on emotional regulation, somatic awareness, and transforming shame and self-perception. By analyzing feedback from retreat participants, including exit interviews, focus groups, and surf journals, Christine ensures that the insights gained will help shape future retreats to better support participants’ healing journeys.

Our approach is inspired by and informed through training with Groundswell Community Project, a global leader in surf therapy. Their model integrates globally recognized curriculum that blends art and play therapy, feminist therapy theory, positive psychology, indigenous wisdom and ocean centered healing to ensure that each program is both impactful and intentional.

At the heart of our work is a simple belief: healing can happen in community, and the ocean offers a powerful space for transformation.
